When people think of protein powder, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry are often the first flavours that come to mind. But sometimes the simplest option is also one of the most useful, natural. Nothing added. No Sweeteners. No thickeners. Simple and Natural.
When people think of protein powders they think they are just for gym goers or sports enthusiast. Not so!, A natural or plain flavour in a protein powder is very versitile.
Unflavoured protein powder gives you the protein without dictating what it has to taste like. You can drink it as it is, add your own flavours, or use it to increase the protein content of everyday foods.
And protein isn't only for bodybuilders and athletes. It is an essential nutrient that helps the body maintain and repair muscle and other tissues. As we get older, getting enough good-quality protein becomes particularly important for helping us maintain muscle, strength and an active lifestyle.

What is unflavoured protein powder?
Quite simply, it is a protein powder without the chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or other flavour systems found in many conventional protein shakes.
Depending on the particular product, the ingredients may include the protein source itself together with something such as lecithin to help it mix. The important thing is to read the ingredient list rather than assuming that "unflavoured" automatically means a single-ingredient product.
For people who don't particularly enjoy sweet protein drinks, or who simply want more control over what they add to their food, unflavoured protein can be an excellent choice.
Who is it particularly useful for? Protein is necessary for everyone's health.
People who want to add protein to everyday food
This is probably one of the greatest advantages of an unflavoured powder. It can be added to porridge, yoghurt, smoothies and pancake mixtures, or used in suitable recipes where a chocolate or strawberry flavour would be completely out of place.
Instead of having to drink a separate protein shake, you can incorporate additional protein into foods you already enjoy.
People who don't like overly sweet protein shakes
Not everyone wants their protein to taste like a dessert.
Many flavoured protein powders use sugar, sweeteners or flavouring systems to create their taste. There is nothing inherently wrong with choosing a flavoured protein, but some people simply prefer something plainer.
An unflavoured powder allows you to decide exactly how you want it to taste.
People who make their own smoothies
If you already use banana, berries, yoghurt, nut butter, milk or other ingredients in a smoothie, why have your protein powder competing with them?
Using an unflavoured protein means the ingredients you choose provide the flavour.
Today it might be banana and yoghurt; tomorrow it could be berries. The same tub of protein works with both.
People looking for a simple protein supplement
Some customers don't want a long list of flavours, sweeteners or additional ingredients.. They simply want a convenient source of protein.
If that sounds like you, an unflavoured powder is certainly worth considering.

Is unflavoured protein as effective as flavoured protein?
The absence of flavouring does not make the protein itself less effective.
What matters is the type, quality and amount of protein the product provides. Whey protein, for example, supplies all of the essential amino acids and is naturally rich in leucine, an amino acid involved in muscle protein synthesis.
Whether you choose flavoured or unflavoured should therefore largely come down to your preference and how you intend to use it.
If you love a chocolate shake, enjoy it. If you would rather have a versatile protein you can adapt yourself, unflavoured may suit you better.
Easy ways to use unflavoured protein powder
In milk or water
This is the simplest option. Unflavoured whey has a mild dairy taste rather than the sweetness associated with flavoured shakes. Milk naturally gives it a creamier taste.
With porridge or oats
Prepare your porridge as normal and stir in your protein powder afterwards. This is an easy way of adding extra protein to breakfast without having another drink alongside it.
In yoghurt
Try stirring a little into natural or Greek-style yoghurt. Add berries, banana or another favourite fruit for flavour.
In a smoothie
Banana, berries, yoghurt, milk and nut butters can all provide plenty of natural flavour while the protein powder does its job quietly in the background.
In pancakes
Unflavoured protein can be incorporated into many pancake recipes. Protein behaves differently from flour when heated, so rather than simply replacing all the flour, use a recipe designed to include protein powder or experiment with a smaller quantity first.
In cooking
An unflavoured powder can also be useful in certain savoury recipes. One word of caution: whey protein can change texture or become lumpy if subjected directly to very high temperatures. Mixing it first with a little cool liquid and adding it gradually is usually preferable.
What should you look for when buying?
Start with the ingredient list. "Unflavoured" does not necessarily mean that absolutely nothing else has been added, so check exactly what you are buying.
Look at the amount of protein provided per serving and consider whether you want a whey concentrate, whey isolate or another type of protein.
Whey concentrate generally retains a little more of the naturally occurring fat and lactose found in whey, while whey isolate undergoes additional processing and is typically higher in protein and lower in fat and lactose.
Neither is automatically the "right" choice for everyone.
A simple way to add more protein to your day
One of the things I have learned from many years in the nutrition business is that good nutrition doesn't always have to be complicated.
An unflavoured protein powder is a good example. It is simple, versatile and can fit around the foods you already enjoy rather than asking you to change your diet around a particular flavour.
Whether you're training regularly, trying to maintain your muscle as you get older, or simply looking for an easy way to increase your daily protein intake, it can be an extremely useful product to have in the cupboard.
Stay strong, stay active and look after the body that has to carry you through life.
