From Arthur's scrapbook... A newspaper clipping from June 1963 tells the story of a champion in the making.
Every now and again I come across something that takes me straight back to Arthur's early years. This newspaper clipping, published on Thursday 27th June 1963, is one of those treasures. The headline reads "Limbering Up for Saturday", showing Arthur training alongside fellow lifters before a major competition at Park Congregational School in Halifax. Arthur was already making a name for himself.
The article describes him as the favourite for the competition, having recently won the Halifax Charity Gala and finishing third in the Yorkshire Championships the previous weekend. Those achievements were no accident. They were the result of countless hours of disciplined training, determination and a genuine love of strength sport.
What always impressed me about Arthur wasn't simply that he won titles.
It was the way he approached training.
Long before sports nutrition became fashionable, Arthur believed that success came from combining sensible eating, quality nutrition, hard work and consistency. There were no shortcuts, miracle products or overnight transformations—just dedication, patience and looking after your body.
Those beliefs never changed.
Years later, they inspired him to write Ultimate Nutrition for All Sport, a book that helped thousands of athletes and health-conscious people understand how nutrition could improve both sporting performance and everyday wellbeing.
That same philosophy became the foundation of Ultimate Nutrition.
Although many people know Arthur as the author or as one of Britain's successful weightlifters, I remember the man behind the medals. He loved helping people. He enjoyed answering customers' questions and encouraging people of all ages—not just athletes—to eat well, stay active, and keep their bodies as healthy as possible.
Looking at this photograph today, I don't just see a young weightlifting champion. I see the beginning of a lifetime devoted to helping others become stronger and healthier.
More than sixty years have passed since that newspaper was printed, but Arthur's message is just as relevant today.
- Stay active.
- Look after your muscles.
- Feed your body well.
- Be consistent.
They're simple principles, but they work.
Every product we sell at Ultimate Nutrition reflects those same values. While nutrition science has advanced enormously since 1963, Arthur's belief that good health is built on knowledge, quality and commitment remains at the heart of everything we do.
Whenever I discover another piece of Arthur's history, I'm reminded that Ultimate Nutrition isn't just a supplement company. It's the continuation of a life's work that began in gyms like the one pictured here, with a young man who simply wanted to become the very best he could be.
And I know he'd still be encouraging every one of us to keep moving, keep learning and never stop looking after our health.
